The Grermen army took over Austria,poland and Checkleslavokia. If jews were caught they faced concentration camps, imprisionment and/or immediate execution. people who tried to help the jews ecsape were known as the resistance.

maria is traveling to her aunt hellas house. as soon as she got there there was a hail of gun fire and bombs exploding everywhere. maria is sent to her aunts barn to stay in a cellar where she will be safe. she is startled when she finds out there are at least 20 other people in her aunts cellar. maria is awakened by a russian soldier pounding on the cellar. they opened the cellar door. the russian soldier told all of the people to rush across the river where they will b safe. maria finds out that her father has been shot by there neighbor trying to help the two jewish men to safety. a few years later one of the jewish men sends for maria and her family to join the man at his house.

Henry and his brothers are now home schooled.
